Artnet Gallery Network has a roundup called “Meet 5 Midwestern Artists From the Artnet Gallery Network,” and its main point is simple: there’s no single through line for what it means to be a Midwestern artist, and even the region’s boundaries can be blurry beyond a connection to a specific place. The article notes why the Midwest can be attractive for artists—world class museums, academic institutions, a more affordable cost of living than coastal cities, and physical and spiritual space. It then highlights five artists who’ve lived and worked in the Midwest for much of their lives: Ellen Lanyon, McArthur Binion, Beverly Fishman, Anthony Mitri, and Kay Rosen—artists who may or may not identify strongly with the region through their work, but together show its range.
