10 Contemporary Artists Reckoning With Fatherhood

The article spotlights Arleene Correa Valencia, whose father left Michoacán, Mexico, in 1996 to find work in the United States; during a 2022 Federico Sevilla Sierra Printmaking Residency at Mullowney Printing in Portland, Oregon, she made “Antes de mí,” a series of six copperplate photogravures combining family photos, letters, Mexica imagery, embroidery, and beading. It also features Amanda Ross-Ho’s “Untitled Prop Archive (THE PORTFOLIO),” which reconstructs a set of 37 photographs her Chinese immigrant father, Ruyell Ho, made in the early 1980s to successfully apply for a job at a commercial photo studio.
