16 Arrested for Showing Portraits of People Killed by ICE in DC Senate Building
Police arrested 16 Women’s March protesters on August 5 after they staged a “die-in” and unfurled banners with portraits of people killed by ICE agents or who died in ICE custody on the marble floor of the Hart Senate Office Building in Washington, DC. The banners used hand-drawn portraits by Italian artist Gianluca Costantini depicting Alex Pretti, Renée Good, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, Ruben Ray Martinez, Ryan Carol Kidd, Jonah Neal, Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero, and two unidentified individuals, each labeled “Killed by I.C.E.” with dates of death. Women’s March said the action targeted senators it accused of financing ICE violence ahead of the August recess, and Capitol Police had not responded to inquiries about arrests or charges at the time of publication. The group also displayed balcony banners reading “ICE Kills” and “Abolish ICE,” and cited at least 54 deaths in ICE custody since Donald Trump took office for his second term, noting the figure was amended as more information emerged.
