A Dystopian ‘Black Mirror’ Experience Lands at the Shed

An immersive Black Mirror–inspired experience will make its U.S. debut at New York’s the Shed on June 20, running for a limited engagement through September. Built around an original story from Charlie Brooker’s dystopian universe, the hour-long production combines virtual reality with physical sets and follows up to six participants through a scenario involving the tech corporation Phaethon and its humanoid robot product, LifeAgent. Participants create personal avatars by providing face and voice data to an AI, foregrounding themes of surveillance, privacy, and biometric data. Developed by Banijay Live Studio (Paris) with the technology firm Univrse, the project won the Special Jury Prize in the Cannes Film Festival’s immersive competition in May and is running concurrently in Madrid at Espacio Delicias, after opening at Montreal’s Infinity Experience space.
