A First Look at the Art in the New Obama Presidential Center
Hyperallergic reports that the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago’s Jackson Park is set to open to the public later in June, following five years of construction and landscape reshaping. The $850 million campus includes a stone tower by Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects, an NBA regulation-size basketball court, a Chicago Public Library branch, a playground, gardens, plazas, and other civic and recreational spaces. It will also feature more than 28 commissioned artworks by artists including Idris Khan, Theaster Gates, Lorna Simpson, María Magdalena Campos-Pons, and Maya Lin. The art program is led by Curator of Commissions Virginia Shore, Curator of Collections Crystal Moten, and Museums Director Louise Bernard, with an emphasis on connecting the Obama narrative to Chicago South Side public art and community expectations.
