A Precious Garden Grows at MoMA PS1
Artist and poet Precious Okoyomon has created a courtyard installation at MoMA PS1 in Long Island City, Queens, transforming the museum’s typically stark outdoor space into a planted garden intended to remain for two years. The work features a large teddy bear sculpture that visitors can enter by sliding through the figure and exiting through its mouth. Okoyomon described the passage as a portal during a press event held on an overcast, drizzly Wednesday, referencing Leo Bersani’s 1987 queer theory essay “Is the Rectum a Grave?” The installation is presented as an interactive environment emphasizing joy, exploration, and tranquility.
