A selective history of the moving image comes to downtown Los Angeles
The Julia Stoschek Foundation is presenting its first major US exhibition of time-based media at the Variety Arts Theater, a 1924 Italianate venue in downtown Los Angeles, according to a 25 February 2026 report in The Art Newspaper. Curated by Udo Kittelmann—who describes himself as an “editor”—the free, reservation-recommended show includes more than 40 works spanning from early moving-image history (including Alice Guy-Blaché and Georges Méliès) to contemporary artists such as Doug Aitken and Arthur Jafa. Works are installed across the building on monitors and projections, with examples cited including Dara Birnbaum’s “Technology/Transformation: Wonder Woman” (1978–79), Sturtevant’s “Pacman” (2012), Jon Rafman’s “Oh, the humanity” (2015), and Lu Yang’s “DOKU: The Flow” (2024). Foundation founder Julia Stoschek said Los Angeles was chosen for its central role in global cinema and moving-image culture.
