‘A tribute to everyday women’: Tschabalala Self's Fourth Plinth commission unveiled in London

On 10 September, New York-based artist Tschabalala Self unveiled “Lady in Blue,” the 16th Fourth Plinth commission in London’s Trafalgar Square, a bronze sculpture of a Black woman walking. London deputy mayor for culture Justine Simons described the work as “a tribute to everyday women,” while Self said she hopes it advances contemporary ideas of personhood for women and Black people in public space. The sculpture will remain on the plinth for two years and is then set to move permanently to Fornebu, Norway, after being sold to a private foundation that will keep it publicly accessible. The Fourth Plinth is funded by the Mayor of London with support from Arts Council England and Bloomberg Philanthropies, with production also backed by Self’s gallery Pilar Corrias; the next announced commission is by Andra Ursuța, scheduled to be unveiled in 2028.
