An expert’s guide to Anish Kapoor: five must-read books

The Art Newspaper’s Mary Richards, publisher at London’s Hayward Gallery, recommends five books as an expert guide to understanding Anish Kapoor’s five-decade career, timed to a major Hayward exhibition of his work running until 18 October. The list includes the Anish Kapoor (1998) Hayward catalogue with an essay by Homi K. Bhabha; the Anish Kapoor (2009) catalogue tied to Kapoor’s Royal Academy survey and featuring Shooting into the Corner (2008–09); and Anish Kapoor: Versailles (2015), produced for his Palace of Versailles commission and designed with sealed pages that must be cut open. Richards also highlights Anish Kapoor: Works, Thoughts, Experiments (2018) from the Serralves exhibition in Porto and Anish Kapoor: Painting (2022), the first book-length study focused on his paintings. The article notes two current Hayward Gallery Publishing releases accompanying the exhibition: Anish Kapoor (240pp, £45, hardback) and Way Out Way In: Photographs by Anish Kapoor (256pp, £25, hardback).
