Art Basel Curbs Pre-Fair Sales—and More Art Industry News

Artnet News reported on April 27, 2026, that Art Basel has introduced a “Basel Exclusive” initiative to curb PDF pre-fair sales by encouraging galleries to hold back works from previews and prioritize in-person discovery. About 170 of the fair’s 232 exhibitors have opted in for the flagship Basel event running June 16–21, 2026. The roundup also noted that Volta will return to Basel’s Congress Center June 17–21 with around 70 exhibitors and a new “5,000 Edit” of works priced under CHF 5,000 (about $6,360). It also highlighted Esther, an alternative fair, returning to New York’s Estonia House for its third edition May 12–16, 2026, with roughly two dozen exhibitors during Frieze Week, and mentioned Sotheby’s New York setting a U.S. design-auction record at $96 million from the Jean and Terry de Gunzburg collection, including $33.5 million for 15 Claude Lalanne mirrors made for Yves Saint Laurent.
