Art Basel Qatar Opens With Big Ambitions, Limited Sales
Art Basel Qatar opened its first edition in Doha on 3 February 2026 with strong VIP interest but limited first-day sales, according to Artnet News. The fair features 87 exhibitors in a booth-less format spread across M7 and the Doha Design District in Msheireb, and Art Basel CEO Noah Horowitz said the model is “intentionally different,” even as all works remain for sale. The event is produced in partnership with Qatar Sports Investments (QSI) and QC+, the commercial arm of Qatar Museums, and Qatar Museums chair Sheikha Al-Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani called it “the beginning of a bold and unique undertaking.” The report notes ongoing questions about the fair’s long-term sustainability and who it primarily serves within a state-led cultural ecosystem.
