Art Basel Qatar to move to Herzog & de Meuron-designed venue

Sheikha Al-Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani announced that Art Basel Qatar will relocate to a purpose-built venue on Al Maha Island in Lusail, north of Doha, with a target groundbreaking date of 2028. The inaugural Art Basel Qatar fair launched in February across two sites—the M7 culture hub and the Doha Design District—and the new venue is planned to host exhibitions and events year-round. The wider mixed-use island development is projected to serve an anticipated population of 450,000 and includes plans for more than 150 houses, some designed by Herzog & de Meuron, though the private investor and total cost were not disclosed. Herzog & de Meuron is also designing the Lusail Museum, intended to house what is described as the world’s largest collection of Orientalist painting and photography, with works by artists including Titian, Eugène Delacroix, Jean-Léon Gérôme, and Paul Klee.
