Art Basel Reveals More Participating Galleries and the Artists Selected for its ‘Exclusive’ Initiative, Which Withholds Artworks from Email Previews
Art Basel announced expanded participation in its new “Basel Exclusive” initiative, which asks galleries to withhold between one artwork and an entire booth presentation from emailed PDF previews sent to collectors and advisors. The program will debut at Art Basel in Basel on June 18–21, with VIP preview days June 16–17, and participating galleries will be marked on floor plans with selected works identified by plaques. According to the fair, 193 of 232 main-sector exhibitors (about 83%) have joined, up from 170 when the initiative was first announced in April, including major dealers such as Gagosian, Hauser & Wirth, David Zwirner, Pace, and Perrotin. Around 230 artists are covered, spanning figures from Etel Adnan and Louise Bourgeois to Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, and Jean-Michel Basquiat, as Art Basel’s Vincenzo de Bellis emphasized the importance of seeing works in person.
