Artist Erna Rosenstein, whose work about memory and loss resonates today, celebrated with major Vienna exhibition

The Belvedere in Vienna is presenting a major survey of Polish artist Erna Rosenstein (1913–2004) titled “On the Other Side of Silence,” examining her painting, poetry, and assemblage work shaped by grief, displacement, and the murder of her parents during the Shoah. Curator Stephanie Auer describes Rosenstein’s recurring motif of portrait-like, severed floating heads of her parents, which appears across more than five decades of work, including the 1951 painting “Screens.” The exhibition also situates Rosenstein’s growing international recognition following appearances in Documenta 14 (Kassel, 2017) and “Surrealism Beyond Borders” (Metropolitan Museum of Art, 2021; Tate Modern, 2022). “Erna Rosenstein: On the Other Side of Silence” runs at the Lower Belvedere from 3 July to 10 January 2027.
