Artist starts legal case against Meta for deleting her Instagram account

Artist, journalist, and activist Emma Shapiro is pursuing legal action against Meta after Instagram permanently terminated her account @nipeople on 8 December 2025, one day after she appealed its suspension. Shapiro, a US-born artist living in Spain, created the account in 2018 as part of her Exposure Therapy project (launched in 2017) critiquing what she describes as sexist censorship of female-presenting nipples online. Avant-Garde Lawyers filed a complaint with Spain’s Comisión Nacional de los Mercados y la Competencia (CNMC), arguing Meta failed to meet obligations under the EU Digital Services Act by not providing a clear statement of reasons or a meaningful chance to contest the decision. The account had been suspended after a post showing a metal pole covered in nipple stickers, with Meta citing alleged “account integrity” violations.
