Arts Council England abolishes beleaguered flagship strategy
Arts Council England (ACE) has replaced its 2020–2030 flagship strategy Let’s Create with an interim Strategic Framework after a government-commissioned review led by Labour peer Margaret Hodge, published last December, criticized the strategy as overly bureaucratic. Hodge wrote that while many supported Let’s Create’s principles, its implementation “stifled creativity and innovation,” and ACE acknowledged that some funded organizations felt constrained by the framework. The new framework is positioned as a “stepping-stone” to enable “impactful funding decisions” amid finite resources and is built around three aims: “support excellence, deliver for everybody and reach everywhere.” ACE also says it will immediately begin developing a new service for freelancers and individual artists, including a national funding programme, while continuing its “Priority Places” initiative to address uneven geographic investment.
