At the Venice Biennale, collateral exhibitions embrace the possibilities of digital art

Collateral exhibitions at the 61st Venice Biennale, running in Venice until late November, are highlighting digital art’s range and potential amid broader cultural skepticism. Shows hosted by the Qatar campus of Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of the Arts (VCUarts), the Autotelic Foundation, and the Berggruen Foundation present perspectives on digital art’s past, present, and future. VCUarts Qatar’s “Aghrab Idrāk: Thresholds of Perception” (on view until 22 November) includes works such as Mesh Lab’s dystopian cyclops robot, Boost Lab’s large-scale air-filtration sculpture “Chrysalis” led by VCU alumnus Syed Erzum Naqvi, and xLab’s light-and-sound installation “Preceding Emptiness.” Dean Amir Berbić attributes the exhibition’s technology focus to the campus’s “horizontal structure” integrating faculty, students, and alumni across research labs.
