Australia’s Museum of Old and New Art Plans Bangkok Branch
Australia’s Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) announced plans for “MONA Bangkok,” a new branch in Thailand developed with Asset World Corp Public Company Limited (AWC) and led by DarkLab under MONA founder David Walsh. The museum is slated to open in 2029 on the Chao Phraya River, and AWC plans to build a cross-river cable car to bring visitors directly to the site. MONA, founded in Hobart, Tasmania in 2011, has drawn more than 5 million visitors but has not turned a profit over the past eight years and is supported by Walsh’s contributions. The project arrives amid Bangkok’s expanding cultural scene and follows MONA’s 2024 controversy over the women-only “Ladies Lounge” installation by Kirsha Kaechele.
