Bank opens museum in Spanish city of Santander to display its 1,000-strong art collection

Banco Santander is opening a new museum, Faro Santander, on 8 September in Santander, Spain, to display its 1,000-work art collection, which includes artists such as Lucas Cranach the Elder, Velázquez, Titian, Rubens, Goya, and Picasso. The museum occupies the 1795 Pereda Building, formerly the bank’s headquarters, renovated by British architect David Chipperfield into 10,000 sq. m of exhibition space. The project was financed by the Santander Foundation and was said by the bank in 2018 to cost €40m, though the bank and museum director Daniel Vega Pérez declined to provide an updated figure. Faro Santander is intended to help form an “art triangle” with the Centro Botín (opened 2017) and a planned Reina Sofía outpost due to open in 2027.
