Biennale of Sydney Appoints Low Kee Hong Artistic Director of 2028 Edition
The Biennale of Sydney named Low Kee Hong as artistic director for its 26th edition, scheduled to take place in 2028 across venues in and around Sydney and New South Wales. The previous Biennale, titled “Rememory” and directed by Hoor Al Qasimi, closed last month, and her 2025 edition drew criticism from some Jewish groups in Australia over perceived preference for anti-Zionist participants; Al Qasimi did not attend the preview amid the controversy. Hong, a Singapore-born curator and producer, is the founding creative director of Factory International in Manchester, which opened in 2023 and also organizes the Manchester International Festival (next held in 2027); he also curated Ai Weiwei’s site-specific show “Ai Weiwei: Button Up!” there. He previously led theater and performing arts at Hong Kong’s West Kowloon Cultural District Authority and served as artistic director and general manager of the Singapore Arts Festival, as well as founding director of the Singapore Biennale. According to ABC, Hong is the first Southeast Asian to lead the Biennale of Sydney.
