Cai Guo-Qiang joins White Cube
White Cube has announced representation of Chinese-born, New York–based artist Cai Guo-Qiang, marking the first gallery to represent him, according to The Art Newspaper. The partnership coincides with White Cube’s solo presentation of Cai’s ongoing gunpowder painting series featuring birds (begun in 2018) at TEFAF New York, running 14–19 May. Cai is known for gunpowder paintings and first experimented with gunpowder in 1984 in Quanzhou; his later projects included a controlled fireworks blast on London’s Millennium Bridge for Tate Modern and work for the 2008 Beijing Olympics ceremonies. White Cube’s TEFAF presentation includes blue-toned avian works as well as studies connected to projects at the Uffizi (2018) and Beijing’s Palace Museum (2020), with Cai describing his turn toward blue after decades of charred black as a search for “a spiritual colour.”
