Call my agent: why artist management companies are making a comeback
Artist management agencies are re-emerging as the traditional gallery model faces upheaval and artists’ practices become more interdisciplinary, The Art Newspaper reports. Cristopher Canizares recently left Hauser & Wirth to start the Artist Legacy Bureau, joining newer ventures launched over the past two years such as London’s Sensity Studio (founded by Dina Mostovaya), Miami’s Art+Mgmt (founded by Julia Bassiri), Anne Verhallen’s KUNST Agency, and New York’s Spencer Young. Former Stephen Friedman Gallery director Jon Horrocks—after the gallery’s closure earlier this year—is launching an agency focused on museum partnerships, aiming to work with a small roster of four or five artists, including Sarah Ball and Nick Goss. Horrocks said his fees will be structured on a sliding scale, using retainers and/or commissions tied to museum sales, and he described the work as long-term career development that complements rather than replaces galleries.
