Carmen Maria Machado on Power
Hyperallergic profiled Cuban-American writer Carmen Maria Machado as a guest curator for “The Object of Power is Power,” a one-room exhibition of paintings by Cuban artist Rocío García at the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art in Soho, curated in collaboration with head curator Stamatina Gregory and titled after a quote from George Orwell’s “1984.” In an interview with associate editor Lakshmi Rivera Amin, Machado said she hopes the show prompts viewers to consider both state violence and power and the ways power is exchanged between people, reflecting themes of sexuality and authority present in García’s large-scale canvases.
