Citing Censorship, Artist Emma Shapiro Launches Legal Challenge to Restore Instagram Account
Artist, journalist, and activist Emma Shapiro is challenging Meta after Instagram permanently terminated her account @nipeople on December 8, 2025, deleting a project tied to her 2017 initiative “Exposure Therapy.” The account posted images of female nipples to question whether bodies are inherently pornographic and to highlight gender-based discrimination reflected in laws. Shapiro says Meta suspended the account after she posted a short video of a utility pole covered in the project’s nipple stickers, citing “account integrity” policies, and deleted it a day later after an in-app appeal. In June, her lawyers at Avant-Garde Lawyers filed a complaint with Spain’s CNMC alleging Meta failed to meet obligations under the EU Digital Services Act, while a separate out-of-court dispute process through User Rights has contacted Meta for case details.
