Clive Davis’s Warhol, Hockney Paintings Head to Christie’s During Marquee New York Sales
Eight paintings from the collection of record producer Clive Davis, who died this past June, will be sold at Christie’s during the November marquee sales in New York, with a combined value stated as more than $35 million. The group includes an Andy Warhol painting of Aretha Franklin from around 1986, a 2009 landscape by David Hockney, and a 1992 abstraction by Joan Mitchell, along with works by Frank Stella, George Condo, and Robert Motherwell; Christie’s has not released individual estimates. Sara Friedlander, Christie’s chairman of postwar and contemporary art, said Davis had a distinctive ability to recognize and cultivate talent, linking his musical legacy to the sale announcement. Although Davis was not widely known as a major art collector, Christie’s materials included a statement attributed to him describing a long-standing passion for art and regular study of auction catalogs.
