Collector Bernardo Paz plans new museum in Brazil next-door to Inhotim

Brazilian collector and former mining magnate Bernardo Paz is developing a new museum and botanical garden on a 311-acre site next to Inhotim in Brumadinho, Minas Gerais, with the first pavilions scheduled to open in September 2027. Brazilian reports have estimated the cost at about $195 million, though a project spokesperson told The Art Newspaper that figure was “exaggerated” without providing an alternative. The institution will show Paz’s personal collection of roughly 3,000 works and plans up to 40 pavilions, with early presentations including works by Michael Heizer and Brazilian artists Anna Maria Maiolino and Sonia Gomes. The curatorial team includes Allan Schwartzman, Paulo Miyada, and Fernanda Arruda, and the nonprofit project—informally referred to as Instituto Bernardo Paz or Museu das Árvores—comes after Paz stepped down as Inhotim board chair in 2017; a money-laundering conviction from that year was later overturned on appeal.
