Comment | Art Basel’s Zero 10 grows up and outgrows the digital community that led to its inception

Art Basel’s digital art sector Zero10 made its Swiss debut in Basel’s Messeplatz in mid-June, presented as “The Condition” and co-curated by Eli Scheinman and artist Trevor Paglen. With 20 exhibitors, it was the largest Zero10 edition to date and leaned heavily on historically framed presentations, including Fellowship’s first-ever side-by-side showing of John Gerrard’s Western Flag (Spindletop, Texas) (2017), Flare (Oceania) (2022), and STANDARD (2023). The sector also revealed internal tensions, as several participants and Paglen distanced themselves from prompt-based image generation in favor of code-based or more elaborate digital practices. Toronto-based artist 0xDEAFBEEF showed hand-welded oscilloscope works with Asprey Studio and, at Artmeta’s Digital Art Summit on 15 June, criticized prompt-generated visuals while citing influences such as Ben Laposky (1914–2000), whose oscilloscope prints were also displayed.
