Could Colorado Create the Country's First Artist Corporation?

Colorado lawmakers are considering a bipartisan bill that would create the United States’ first “Artists Corporation” (A-Corp), a distinct LLC structure limited to artists, according to Hyperallergic. The proposal is backed by Yancey Strickler, former CEO of Kickstarter, who said he promoted the idea in a TED talk last year and argues that existing corporate forms can be ill-suited and costly for artistic missions. Strickler said artists currently often pay around $10,000 for custom legal structures, and that A-Corps could lower costs, help enshrine intellectual property rights, and potentially expand access to group health insurance plans. Because Colorado allows out-of-state businesses to register there, the framework could affect artists and collectives beyond Colorado if enacted.
