Denmark’s Louisiana Museum Announces Remedios Varo Exhibition in Fall 2026
Denmark’s Louisiana Museum of Modern Art announced “Painting Magic,” an exhibition of about 70 works by Spanish-born artist Remedios Varo, running from September 18, 2026, to January 10, 2027, before traveling to the Moderna Museet in Stockholm. The show will include Varo’s paintings, drawings, and photographs, with loans from private collections and museums worldwide. Varo was born in 1908, moved to Paris at 19 and associated with artists including André Breton, Max Ernst, Salvador Dalí, and Leonora Carrington, then settled in Mexico City in the early 1940s, where her career grew; she had successful exhibitions in 1955 and 1958 and died of a heart attack in 1963. The museum highlighted eight included paintings, such as “Exploración de las fuentes del río Orinoco,” “Woman Leaving the Psychoanalyst’s Office,” and “Star Porridge,” while noting Varo resisted being labeled a Mexican Surrealist despite frequent comparisons to Frida Kahlo and Carrington.
