Detroit Institute of Arts Receives Gift of More Than 2,000 Modern and Contemporary Artworks from Silverman Estate
The Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) received a gift of more than 2,000 modern and contemporary artworks from the estate of Detroit collectors Gilbert B. and Lila Silverman, one of the largest donations in the museum’s history. Spanning nearly 500 artists, the works will begin going on view in November when the DIA reopens its renovated Modern and Contemporary Art galleries, and they expand holdings across six curatorial departments. The donation deepens the museum’s Fluxus holdings—building on 130 works given in 2008 via the Gilbert B. and Lila Silverman Fluxus Foundation—and adds first-time entries to the DIA collection by artists such as Vito Acconci, Diane Arbus, Jenny Holzer, Antony Gormley, Rachel Whiteread, and Christopher Wool. DIA director Salvador Salort-Pons said the gift will reshape the museum’s presentation of modern and contemporary art, with further renovation and reinstallation details to be announced later.
