End of the line for Bergamot Station, Santa Monica’s arts hub?

Bergamot Station Arts Center, a 5.6-acre, city-owned arts complex in Santa Monica that has housed galleries and nonprofits since 1994, faces possible demolition as the city considers the site for housing development. The Art Newspaper reports the potential redevelopment is tied to California Senate Bill 79, signed by Governor Gavin Newsom in October 2025, which promotes high-density building in transit-rich areas. Santa Monica reclassified the property as “surplus land” in February 2025, told tenants they would have about two years to vacate, and issued a request for proposals in June 2025 that could replace the existing complex—home to 18 galleries, studios, and cultural venues—with private development.
