Experimental Sound Artist Ryoji Ikeda Wins 2026 Nam June Paik Prize
Japanese visual artist and composer Ryoji Ikeda has won the ninth Nam June Paik Prize, a biannual award that includes a ₩50 million (about $36,807) purse and a solo exhibition at the Nam June Paik Art Centre in Yongin, South Korea. Ikeda, known for work with sound, data, and immersive audiovisual environments, began experimenting with digital audio glitches in the 1990s and has presented projects such as the 65-minute performance “superposition” (2012) and the installation “data-verse 1,” which premiered at the Venice Biennale in 2019 using open-source scientific data from organizations including NASA and CERN. The selection was made by a committee and jury that included curators Cecilia Alemani, Naomi Beckwith, and John G. Hanhardt, with comments emphasizing Ikeda’s engagement with data visualization, algorithmic processing, and signal theory. The prize was established in 2009.
