Faro Santander’s Inaugural Exhibitions Led by Contested Gelman Collection
Banco Santander Foundation will open Faro Santander, a new art museum and cultural hub on Spain’s northern coast, on September 8 in the bank’s former headquarters, the 231-year-old Pereda Building on Santander’s waterfront. Pritzker Prize–winning architect David Chipperfield led the conversion into a 10-story, nearly 110,000-square-foot institution with features including a technology hub, a space for Cantabrian artists, and a rooftop observation deck. The inaugural exhibitions include “Masterpieces from the Banco Santander Collection,” curated by María Dolores Jiménez-Blanco and drawn from a collection of more than 1,000 objects spanning the 2nd century B.C.E. to today, plus “Modern Mexico in the Gelman Santander Collection,” drawn from the contested Gelman collection. The opening program also includes the Spanish presentation of “Leonora Carrington: The Symptomatic Surreal,” which first opened at London’s Freud Museum in March.
