FKA Twigs and Brian Eno among artists included in the Vatican's sound-based 2026 Venice Biennale pavilion

The Holy See (Vatican City) will present a sound-focused pavilion at the Venice Biennale running 9 May–22 November, featuring artists and musicians including Brian Eno, FKA Twigs, Precious Okoyomon, Otobong Nkanga, Patti Smith, Jim Jarmusch, and organist Kali Malone. Titled The Ear is the Eye of the Soul, the project draws on the life and legacy of Saint Hildegard of Bingen (1098–1179), later declared a saint and Doctor of the Catholic Church by Pope Benedict XVI in 2012. Twenty-four artists will show work across two sites in Venice—the Mystical Garden of the Discalced Carmelite in Cannaregio and the Santa Maria Ausiliatrice Complex in Castello—with commissions realized in collaboration with Soundwalk Collective (founded in 2001). The pavilion is co-organized by Serpentine artistic director Hans Ulrich Obrist and curator/publisher Ben Vickers, and will also include the unveiling of Alexander Kluge’s final work, a 12-station film and image installation, following his death last month.
