For Fashion Iconoclast Iris van Herpen, ‘Nature Is the Best Artist’
Artnet News reports that the Brooklyn Museum is presenting “Sculpting the Senses,” a retrospective of Dutch fashion designer Iris van Herpen spanning roughly two decades and featuring more than 140 biomorphic couture creations. Curated by Matthew Yokobosky and Imani Williford, the exhibition originated at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris in 2023 and pairs van Herpen’s garments with works by artists including Agostino Arrivabene, Courtney Mattison, Tara Donovan, and Heishiro Ishino, alongside references such as Ernst Haeckel illustrations, a 50-million-year-old fossil, and Ovid’s “Metamorphoses.” The show highlights van Herpen’s use of advanced fabrication methods, including an early 3D-printed garment from her 2010 “Crystallization” collection, and collaborations such as her recent work with A.A. Murakami on Eileen Gu’s Met Gala “Airo” dress, which used 8,000 UV-bonded crystalline glass spheres.
