Founders of alternative art fair Basel Social Club to launch new event in Tokyo
The founders of the alternative art fair Basel Social Club will launch a Tokyo offshoot called Tokyo Jazz Club during Art Week Tokyo, running 1–8 November in a former capsule hotel in Jimbocho. Co-founders Robbie Okuda Fitzpatrick and Yael Salomonowitz said the project will combine contemporary art, performance, music, and food, aiming to “privilege experience over spectacle” and blur boundaries between exhibition and performance. Basel Social Club began in 2022 as an experimental alternative to Art Basel, staging five editions in unconventional venues such as a former mayonnaise factory and, this year, a disused office building near Basel’s main train station. Tokyo Jazz Club partners with Art Week Tokyo (4–8 November), which this year spans 55 venues and includes an AWT Focus platform with 10 curated projects, plus free buses connecting participating sites.
