Frieze New York to Include Whitney Biennial Commission and New $50,000 Acquisition Fund
Frieze New York’s 2026 edition will run May 13–17 at the Shed with more than 65 exhibitors and will include institutional collaborations plus a new acquisition fund. In partnership with the Whitney Museum, Frieze will present Jonathan González’s “Body Configurations” (2023–25), a six–C-print photographic installation commissioned for the Whitney Biennial and displayed on the Shed’s sixth floor, and González will stage the durational performance “magic hour–golden time” (2026) from May 15–17 on Whitney terraces and the High Line. A new Focus-section acquisition fund backed by collector Michael Sherman and the Sherman Family Foundation will provide $50,000 annually for five years, including $20,000 for two artworks and a $5,000 unrestricted award to each artist whose work is acquired; the Baltimore Museum of Art and the Brooklyn Museum will each receive one work in 2026. Additional collaborations include Counterpublic presenting a site-responsive installation and performance by Kite (Oglála Lakȟóta) and Dia presenting moving-image works by David Lamelas, including “To Pour Milk into a Glass” (1972) and “Time As Activity” (1969–ongoing).
