Gagosian Gives Up London and Basel Spaces as Mega-Galleries Rethink Their Footprints
Gagosian has closed its small London space in Burlington Arcade and will soon close its Basel, Switzerland, location at Rheinsprung 1, according to reporting cited by ARTnews. The Burlington Arcade outpost opened in 2023, combined a downstairs retail shop with a small upstairs exhibition area, and hosted 16 shows before shutting; Gagosian will continue operating its two Mayfair galleries at Grosvenor Hill and Davies Street. The Basel space began as a pop-up around Art Basel in 2019, stayed open for seven years, and presented 17 exhibitions, with the gallery saying it is considering other possibilities in the city. The closures come amid broader mega-gallery real estate retrenchment, even as Gagosian recently opened a new two-floor, 12,000-square-foot flagship in New York consolidating operations previously spread across spaces at 976 and 980 Madison.
