Gerhard Richter's mosaic-like Doha pavilion will open in November
Qatar Museums announced on 10 September in Berlin that a permanent Gerhard Richter pavilion in Doha will open in November, timed to coincide with the public opening of the Rubaiya Qatar quadrennial on 21 November (running until 30 April). The irregular six-sided “Doha Pavilion: Gerhard Richter,” designed by the 94-year-old artist with architect Annabelle Selldorf, will be built in a waterside park linking I.M. Pei’s Museum of Islamic Art and the future Art Mill Museum. Its exterior patterns derive from Richter’s Abstract Painting (724-4) (1990), which he digitised and cut into 8,192 strips beginning in 2011; inside will be three large Strip paintings, a Strip Tower sculpture, and two Mirror series works, lit by an oculus. Sheikha Al-Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani said the pavilion offers “a three-dimensional experience” of Richter’s work and confirmed the quadrennial Unruly Waters will proceed despite regional tensions.
