Getty Center will close for a year to undergo major renovations

The Getty Center in Los Angeles will close for one year starting 15 March 2027 for its most significant upgrades since it opened in 1997, after welcoming 1.3 million visitors last year. The renovation includes replacing and redesigning the museum’s iconic tram system, which Getty Trust president and CEO Katherine E. Fleming said breaks down too frequently; the new tram is expected to carry 400 more people per hour and add a musical soundtrack. Additional work will reconfigure 27,000 square feet of gallery space, renovate the welcome hall with a new café and shop, improve accessibility, parking, wireless internet and phone signals, and commission new outdoor art, alongside an HVAC upgrade already underway. The Getty Villa in Pacific Palisades will remain open, and Getty will also open a new permanent space on Sepulveda Boulevard; the project is estimated by the Los Angeles Times at $600 million to $800 million and is timed ahead of the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
