Go Time! Gagosian Christens New Madison Avenue Space With Duchamp Readymades
Gagosian will open a newly overhauled ground-floor gallery at 980 Madison Avenue in New York on April 25 with an exhibition of Marcel Duchamp readymades, timed to the Museum of Modern Art’s Duchamp retrospective. The show includes 1964 editions produced with Italian dealer Arturo Schwarz, such as Bicycle Wheel (1964, after the lost 1913 original), a version of Fountain, and a Boîte-en-valise (1935–49; contents 1935–41), with most works from editions of eight. Gagosian noted Duchamp previously exhibited in the building in 1965 at the Cordier and Ekstrom Gallery. Duchamp’s auction record is $11.4 million (€8.9 million) for Belle haleine–eau de voilette (1921), sold at Christie’s Paris in 2009 from the collection of Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé.
