Good Muslim Artist, Bad Muslim Artist

In Hyperallergic, artist and Columbia University professor Naeem Mohaiemen reflects on the post-9/11 period through the lens of Mahmood Mamdani’s 2004 book Good Muslim, Bad Muslim, describing South Asian community activism and the persistence of Islamophobia 25 years after the attacks. Mohaiemen also recounts a personal memory from September 2001 near the Tribeca nightclub Vinyl, where donated clothing was gathered for presumed survivors of the Twin Towers before it became clear by midnight that no one would be pulled out alive. The article’s news roundup reports that the School of Visual Arts is ending its graduate Photography, Video, and Related Media program due to a mounting deficit, and that the UK AIDS Memorial Quilt is returning to Scotland two weeks after its founder Ally Van Tillo died on August 30. It also notes the Brooklyn Public Library’s launch of its first-ever craft-supply lending program and a report that two small tears were found on the Bayeux Tapestry after its transfer to the British Museum in London.
