Gozo Yoshimasu wins first Serpentine x Flag Art Foundation Prize
Japanese artist and poet Gozo Yoshimasu, 87, has won the inaugural £200,000 Serpentine x Flag Art Foundation Prize, described as the largest contemporary art prize in the UK, according to The Art Newspaper. The award includes a solo exhibition at London’s Serpentine North in autumn 2027 and a subsequent presentation at the Flag Art Foundation in Manhattan in spring 2028. Organizers said Yoshimasu’s experimental poetry crosses geography and tests translation, and noted his work appeared in the 36th Bienal de São Paulo, which closed earlier this year. The prize will honor five artists over ten years for a total of £1 million, with this year’s jury including Michelle Kuo (MoMA), Venus Lau (Museum Macan), Hans Ulrich Obrist, and Jonathan Rider (Flag Art Foundation).
