Guggenheim to Screen Artistic Portrait of Soccer Legend Zinédine Zidane
The Guggenheim Museum in New York will screen Douglas Gordon and Philippe Parreno’s 2006 film “Zidane, a 21st century portrait” from June 11 to July 19. The two-channel work follows French soccer star Zinédine Zidane during a 90-minute April 2005 La Liga match between Real Madrid and Villarreal, using footage from 17 cameras in Santiago Bernabéu Stadium combined with broadcast views. Hyperallergic reports this will be the Guggenheim’s first presentation of the piece since the museum acquired one of 17 unique versions, with other editions also showing this summer at venues including the Pérez Art Museum Miami and the Bass Museum. The screening is timed to coincide with the FIFA World Cup, which the article notes is occurring amid broader criticism of FIFA and high ticket prices for matches in the US, Mexico, and Canada.
