Historic Japanese Castle Damaged in 7.1-Magnitude Earthquake

Japan’s Kumamoto Castle in Kumamoto Prefecture on the southwest island of Kyushu was damaged by a 7.1-magnitude earthquake on July 28. Video posted to X showed part of the castle’s moat wall collapsing onto the lawn and into the water near the entrance from Ninomaru Plaza. The castle is described as housing valuable artworks from the Edo period.
