Hong Kong Marquee Art Sales Total $164.9 M., Up 18 Percent From Equivalent 2025 Auctions

Christie’s, Phillips, and Sotheby’s generated a combined $164.9 million from their modern and contemporary evening sales in Hong Kong timed to Art Basel Hong Kong week, an 18% increase over comparable 2025 spring auctions, ARTnews reports. The total also rebounded from $136.3 million in autumn 2025 (the lowest in eight years) and exceeded last spring’s $139.9 million. Christie’s led with its March 27, 2026, evening sale totaling HK$655.7 million ($83.8 million), with the top lot Gerhard Richter’s “Abstraktes Bild” selling for HK$92.1 million ($11.77 million) and Sanyu’s “Cheval agenouillé sur un tapis (Kneeling Horse on Carpet)” reaching HK$63.94 million ($8.17 million). The sale set records including Walter Spies’s “Blick Von Der Höhe (A View From the Heights)” at HK$59.06 million ($7.55 million), Johannes Goedaert’s “Flowers in a Chinese Porcelain Vase, with Butterflies and Other Insects” at HK$10.1 million ($1.29 million), and Lenz Geerk’s “Couple on a Fresco” at HK$2.1 million ($275,000).
