How the Pace Layoffs Went Down—And What Comes Next
ARTnews reports that Pace Gallery’s layoffs unfolded abruptly after a New York Times story published just after midnight said the gallery was preparing to lay off roughly 50 employees and cut about 50 artists. A scheduled 9 a.m. company-wide town hall at Pace’s Chelsea headquarters was switched at the last minute to a Zoom call, lasted under 30 minutes, and did not use the usual advance question form. CEO Marc Glimcher told staff the gallery had grown too large and costs had risen too high, and he largely blamed his own decisions during a decade of mega-gallery expansion. According to people familiar with the cuts, layoffs affected departments across the business, including sales, communications, art resources, and operations.
