IM Youngzoo’s ‘The Late’ Blends a 1,254-Page Research Book and a 7-Channel Video Into a Meditation on Belief and Technology
IM Youngzoo’s solo exhibition “The Late,” on view at Brooklyn’s Space ZeroOne through July 25, combines 17 works that connect Korean folk ritual, spirituality, and emerging technologies such as NFTs, VR, and AI. Central to the show are two works titled “The Late”: a seven-channel video installation and a 1,254-page book that the artist describes as the culmination of 10 years of research and experimentation on the intersection of ritual and technological belief. The video imagery includes footage made with a VR camera reframed to emphasize the device’s “blind spot,” using a recurring motif of a woman’s shadow and scattered light across multiple screens. The accompanying book is presented as intentionally non-linear and disorienting, positioning that disorientation as part of the exhibition’s meditation on belief, meaning-making, and how people navigate a technologically mediated world.
