In Chloe Wise’s ‘Extrasensory’ Basel Show, UFOs Meet Scripture

Artist Chloe Wise’s exhibition “Extrasensory” at Kulturstiftung Basel H. Geiger in Basel presents an installation styled as a gift shop and botánica, mixing religious items such as crucifixes and rosaries with UFO-themed merchandise, tarot decks, and alien figurines. The show incorporates Wise’s 34-minute, three-channel film “PsyFi,” her longest video work to date, and includes prayer candles depicting figures from the film, including Michael Buscemi, JT of City Girls, and Martine Gutierrez, alongside traditional saints. Wise, a 36-year-old New York–based artist represented by Almine Rech, described her interest in “the phenomenon” as encompassing UFOs, angel contact experiences, telepathy, ghosts, quantum mechanics, and consciousness. The article notes Wise first gained attention in 2014 for hyperrealistic sculptures of bread bags and butter mounds and has recently worked on projects including a vinyl cover for Olivia Rodrigo.
