In Performance Series, Artists Tackle the Nature of Images, and Reality, in the Face of AI
A three-day performance program titled “Exert: The Physics of Metaphysics” took place in early May at Giorno Poetry Systems (GPS), a venue in what was once William S. Burroughs’s Bowery loft in New York. Curated by artist Mark Leckey, the series aimed to “give the internet a body” and explored how images and reality are experienced amid constant simulation and the rise of AI. The program included a reading by novelist Hari Kunzru, a performance lecture by critic Gideon Jacobs, a drumming performance by Jay the Bucket Drummer, a Deli Girls concert, and screenings of Leckey’s short films. The event framed contemporary tech marketing—from Meta’s 2021 rebrand to its Ray–Ban Meta smartglasses campaign—as part of a broader cultural push toward immersive, image-driven experiences.
